Life with Many Gods or Life with Elohim

 

My previous email, Discovering the First Truth Claim in the Bible, focused on Genesis 1:1-2. It introduced the first Truth Claim in the Bible: There is only one Elohim. In order to understand the impact that the Torah had on human lives in the ancient world, we must view what living with the gods was like for people in the nations that were neighbors of Israel -- Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Persians. What am I?

What am I? Now that’s a question a lot of people have asked in the history of humans. We ( Rabbi Jeffrey Leynor and former pastor Jim Myers ) created two models for working with that question – after wrestling with it for over 25 years . Will science do a better job than religions?

Science tells us the following things about humans: 1. Humans have basic physical requirements that must be met in order to survive. 2. Humans are totally dependent on other humans from conception to death. 3. Without cooperation or power relationships required for human survival will not exist.   4. Relationships based on cooperation have better outcomes than those based on power. The first stories in the book of Genesis reveal the same ideas.
