Covenants were a common institution in the
ancient Near East. The covenants of the Hebrew Bible are most similar to
the covenants made among the ancient Hittites. These were made between
powerful, sovereign kings and less powerful, subordinate vassals. The Hittite
covenants provided protection in return for allegiance. They were always
voluntary and just. They were made under oath and included no termination
