Love of Mankind is Intimately Bound Up with the Love of God

 

Hillel, Jesus, and Akiba taught that love of man is a central pillar of the Torah’s teaching. However, Hillel added that behind it is something even more basic that is derived from an even greater principle: “Man is made in the image of God.” Love of man flows from the more fundamental love of God. What am I? Now that’s a question a lot of people have asked in the history of humans. We ( Rabbi Jeffrey Leynor and former pastor Jim Myers ) created two models for working with that question – after wrestling with it for over 25 years . You may have noticed that use models instead of answers. Most questions about life are better understood by using models that reveal potentialities than statements of either/or answers . Will science do a better job than religions?

Science tells us the following things about humans: 1. Humans have basic physical requirements that must be met in order to survive. 2. Humans are totally dependent on other humans from conception to death. 3. Without cooperation or power relationships required for human survival will not exist.   4. Relationships based on cooperation have better outcomes than those based on power. The first stories in the book of Genesis reveal the same ideas.
